Fly Fishing Ethics

Public lands: use ’em, don’t abuse ’em

Sustainability

Fly Fishing with sustainability in mind is important because everything in the environment is linked, river systems, fish and animal populations, and surrounding ecosystems. We need to take it seriously if we want the same resources to be available for future generations. Have fun, but Leave No Trace.

Fish Handling and Overfishing

Fish can be incredibly sensitive, so it is important to handle fish with care.

It is equally important to know the fishing regulations for wherever you are fishing. Don't keep fish in Catch and Release sections. Use barbless hooks when ever possible to minimize impact on fish.

Invasive Species

Whether you are boating or wade fishing it is important to reduce the chance of spreading invasive species by cleaning boats and waders when moving between different bodies of water/ river systems.

Stream Etiquette Tips

  • Use barbless hooks to reduce injury during catch and release.

  • Practice proper catch and release: wet your hands, keep fish in the water, and minimize handling time.

  • Avoid fishing during spawning seasons to protect breeding fish.

  • Respect size and bag limits set by local regulations.

  • Leave no Trace, Pickup trash in the river.
